Brown Ivory - Berchemia discolour - is a shrub or a tree that grows up to 20 metres high. Berchemia is named after M. Berchem, a French botanist, and discolor means with 2 or more colours, referring to the fact that the upper and the lower surfaces are different colours.
The Brown Ivory tree is a multipurpose tree and a resin is obtained from the heartwood that is used to make glue. A black dye, popular with basket makers, is produced from the powdered heartwood and the roots. A red dye is obtained from the bark and a whitewash produced from the wood ash is used for painting houses.
The heartwood is yellow-brown with a reddish tinge, the sapwood is pale brown. The wood is very hard, heavy and fine grained. It is excellent for making furniture such as tables, chairs and benches and is also used in making poles, pestles and hair combs.
