The Red Ivory - Berchemia zeyheri - is an evergreen to semi-deciduous tree that grows to a height of up to 15 metres and is very attractive to birds.
It is mostly found in the northern part of South Africa in the province of Limpopo, where local people pick and sell the fruit. Porcuplines love eating the bark of this tree.
The Heartwood ranges in colour from pale pink to deep red and people who are not accustomed to this wood might think the wood has been stained due to its striking red appearance. The grain is fine and has an even texture that finishes beautifully.
