Acrylic blanks are easy to turn and finish to a very high shine. Acrylic pen blanks should be turned at the same speed as you use to turn a wooden pen blank. To reduce the likelihood of the material chipping while turning, we recommend always using sharp tools when working with Acrylics
When correctly turning acrylic material, you should produce cuts of acrylic “ribbons” that curl away from the blank as the lathe spins. Acrylic can chip away if excessive force is applied to the chisel.
When turning the Acrylic blank, do not turn level with the bushings, allow ample material for sanding in order to prevent the blank from being under sized when complete.
For a high gloss finish, use wet sand paper up to 2000 grit or Micro Mesh 12 000 then polish using a polishing compound
Please note: On some translucent acrylic blanks the shiny brass pen tube might show through. To solve this, paint the tube a complementary colour to the acrylic blank before glueing into the blank.
