How to colour your pen tubes when making pens with acrylic pen blanks

Have you ever made a pen using an acrylic pen blank and discovered that the acrylic pen blank is slightly transparent in places and the brass tube is visible through the blank?

This guide will show you how to colour your pen tubes like a professional, to avoid making these nasty discoveries! Colouring your pen tubes is particularly necessary when using lighter coloured pen blanks or those with high transparency.

You will need the following items:

  • The brass pen tubes that you are using to make your pen
  • A set of Sharpie markers or acrylic paints
  • Sandpaper to rough the tubes
Acrylic Paints

Steps to colour your pen tubes:

  1. Rough the brass tubes with sandpaper to provide a surface for the adhesive for later when you glue it into the pen tube.
  2. Use your acrylic paints or Sharpie markers to colour your tubes as shown.
  3. Be creative and try to get your colouring to resemble your pen blank as much as possible - the better your match, the more invisible your pen tube will be.
  4. Wait until the acrylic paint or marker ink is completely dry before gluing the tube into the drilled pen blank.
  5. Once the paint / ink is dry, glue your pen tube into your pen blank and turn your pen.
